Product Description
This is an authentic original color etching by the world-renowned Surrealist master Salvador Dalí, titled "The Ghost Tells the Story of the Murder" (Le spectre conte le récit du meurtre).
This powerful and haunting image is part of Dalí’s prestigious "Hamlet" suite, created in 1973 to illustrate William Shakespeare's legendary tragedy.
Artistic Background & Creation
In the early 1970s, Dalí was commissioned by the famous French publisher Les Heures Claires in Paris to interpret Shakespeare's masterpiece. To create this suite, Dalí utilized a complex combination of etching, drypoint, and aquatint.
The process involved Dalí manually scratching the copper plates with a diamond-tipped needle (drypoint) to achieve the fine, velvet-like lines, while the acid etching and aquatint provided the rich, atmospheric washes of color. Each plate was meticulously inked and pressed onto high-quality heavy paper, ensuring the depth and texture that Dalí is famous for.
The Scene
The artwork depicts the pivotal moment from Act I of Hamlet, where the ghost of the murdered King appears to his son. Dalí uses his signature surrealist vocabulary—distorted figures, eerie shadows, and dreamlike landscapes—to capture the supernatural tension and the psychological weight of the ghost’s revelation.
