Original lithograph from the Pages Choisies de Don Quichotte de la Mancha portfolio, . This specific series is renowned for Salvador Dalí's highly experimental and dynamic approach to the traditional lithographic technique. Collaborating with master printer Joseph Foret in Paris, Dalí used unconventional methods to capture the frantic energy of Don Quixote's visions and struggles.
Instead of traditional drawing on the litho stone, Dalí famously utilized an air gun filled with lithographic ink, firing it directly onto the plate to create the explosive, splattered effects seen in the main black form. He also incorporated other elements of chance and spontaneity, such as dipping snails in ink and allowing them to crawl across the printing surface, leaving organic, swirling traces that form some of the intricate line-work. This innovative method perfectly merges his surrealist paranoiac-critical vision with the literary classic.
