About the Artwork:
Marc Chagall famously stated that the Bible was an eternal echo of nature, and during his peak post-war period, he immersed himself completely in the emotional lyricism of Genesis. In this historic work, he bypasses the rigid restrictions of academic perspective, pouring his personal folklore and spiritual sensitivity into a dance of pure form on premium paper stock. The striking contrast between the intense, textural application of the crayon textures on the stone and the playful inclusion of a levitating bird at their feet reflects the absolute freedom of his art. This piece, preserved with museum-grade care for over six decades, represents a rare window into the legendary collaboration between Chagall and publisher Tériade.
