Collection: Georges Braque
Georges Braque (1882–1963) was a titan of 20th-century modernism and, alongside Pablo Picasso, the co-founder of Cubism. His work represents one of the most radical shifts in art history, moving away from traditional perspective toward a revolutionary way of seeing the world through fragmented forms and multiple viewpoints.
The Architect of Cubism
Born in Argenteuil, France, Braque began his journey as a house painter, which gave him a unique mastery of texture and materials. His artistic evolution was meteoric.
Fauvism & Influence of Cézanne: Initially inspired by the vibrant colors of Fauvism, his encounter with the work of Paul Cézanne in 1907 led him to simplify forms into geometric structures.
The Cubist Revolution (1908–1914): In a historic collaboration with Picasso, Braque "fractured" reality. They invented Analytic Cubism and later Synthetic Cubism, introducing the world to papier collé (pasted paper) and collage—techniques that changed art forever.
Style and Vision: Harmony and Silence
While Picasso was the fiery extrovert, Braque was the philosopher of space. His work is characterized by:
Tactile Texture: Braque often mixed sand, sawdust, or metal into his paint to give the canvas a physical, tactile presence.
Subdued Elegance: His palette focused on sophisticated earth tones—ochres, greys, and blacks—allowing the structural harmony of the composition to shine.
Metamorphosis of Objects: In his later years, his still lifes and iconic "Birds" series became more lyrical and poetic, exploring the "silence" and space between objects.
